I work primarily from photographs that I take of subjects that are of interest to me. My digital camera is always by my side because the opportunity for subject matter is all around us. I enjoy painting everything from cityscapes to still lifes. I also enjoy painting people in the act of doing something other than posing for a portrait. Candid shots are much more fun because the subject is not focused on staring back at the artist.

My drawings are a compilation of the parts of several photographs that I arrange into a cohesive design. Since I used to paint stage sets, I really love to work on a large scale. My paintings are usually rendered on full sheets or elephant size Arches Rough watercolor paper. My palette consists of Daniel Smith, Winsor + Newton and Holbein professional grade watercolors. In order to achieve the intensity of color that I like, I apply clear water on the drawing with one brush and then float the color into it with another brush loaded with paint. This method allows me to actually watch the paint swirl into a design – as if by magic! And I find that the colors remain brighter when applied this way.

The inspiration for my paintings comes from a desire to freeze moments in time so that I can experience them again. When I paint, time is suspended and my imagination roams free.
